Upsala Blue Jays

07/18/2017 - Playoffs Get Underway

Victory League West Division playoffs got underway this past weekend for the Upsala Blue Jays.  The Jays entered playoffs as the #2 seed in the West Division.  Upsala faced the #3 seed Randall Cubs on Saturday at Varsity Field in Upsala.

The Blue Jays would strike early, as Upsala plated four runs in the bottom of the 1st inning off of Cubs starter Ricky Drew.  Highlighting the 4 run rally was a 2 run single by Eric Lampert.  Lampert would also be the starting pitcher for Upsala, throwing 7 innings of shut out ball,  The Jays would add a few more runs later in the game, most notably including a solo homerun off the bat of Brandon Welinski.  Hunter Swanson provided the only RBI for Randall, which was a run scoring single in the 8th inning.  Lampert took the win for Upsala, while Drew took the loss for Randall.

#1 seed Sobieski defeated #5 seed Flensburg by a 15-1 score on Saturday.  This meant that the Blue Jays would travel to Sobieski to face the Skis on Sunday.  Two of the better pitchers in the Victory League faced off in this one, as Matt Swanson received the start for Upsala, and Sobieski countered with Tyler Jendro.  Sobieski would score first on a solo homerun ion the bottom of the 2nd from Collin Eckman.  Upsala would quickly answer in the 3rd inning, scoring twice to take a 2-1 lead.  That score would hold until the 5th when Sobieski tied the game at 2.  Sobieski would then score 8 times in the bottom of the 7th inning to break the game open, highlighted by a grand slam by off the bat of Beau Hanowski.  Sobieski would go onto win by a 10-2 final.  Dustin Biniek and Brock Cichon each had 2 hits for Upsala.  Beau Hanowski, Dan Marod, and Collin Eckman each had 2 hits for Sobieski.

#3 seed Randall defeated the #5 seed Flensburg Falcons by a 9-8 score on Sunday.  The loss eliminated Flensburg from playoff contention.  This means that Upsala will face Randall on this coming Saturday in an elimination game.  The loser will see their season come to an end, while the winner will move on to play Sobieski on Sunday in the West Division Championship game.  The winner will also clinch a berth to the Region 8C tournament hosted by Pierz/Avon.  The winner of Upsala/Randall will need to beat Sobieski twice on Sunday to win the West Division Playoff title.  First pitch of Upsala/Randall is slated for 1:30 PM from Varsity Field in Upsala on Saturday afternoon.
