2016 Season Recap

(view all news)

The 2016 season for the Upsala Blue Jays began in mid-April with a home exhibition game against the Swanville Swans.  The Jays would win the opener by a 15-2 score and thus enter the regular season on a positive note.  The league schedule would begin a week later with a road game at Royalton.  The Blue Jays would win the league opener 11-0 over Royalton.

The month of May opened up with a huge early season showdown with the West Division rival Sobieski Skis.  The Blue Jays would down the Ski's by a 7-1 final.  A week later Upsala would drop its first game of the season, falling to the Lastrup Lakers by a 3-0 score.  Another loss would come the following week as the Jays dropped a game to Sobieski by a 10-9 score, dropping Upsala to 2-2 in league play.

The Blue Jays would then put together a 4 game win streak, beating Opole, Randall, Buckman, and the Pierz Brewers.  Upsala would then fall to the Long Prairie Predators in an exhibition game, but would then win 3 more league games in a row, defeating Flensburg twice as well as the Pierz Bulldogs.

In the last week of June,  Upsala would take part in the Staples Tournament.  Upsala would defeat Detroit Lakes in the opening round of the tournament, and then win 3-2 over Clear Lake to earn a spot in the championship game.  The Jays would fall short in the championship game to Long Prairie for the second time this season.

July began with an 8-0 win over Opole, pushing the Blue Jays winning streak in league games to 8 in a row.  Entering the final game of the regular season, Upsala needed a win to earn the Division title and also clinch the #1 seed in the West Division playoffs.  Upsala would fall in extra innings to Randall 3-1.

Playoffs opened in mid-July, as Upsala hosted the Flensburg Falcons in the first round.  The Jays would win the playoff opener 14-0, but would fall to Sobieski a day later.  That would setup an elimination game with Randall, as the loser would see their season come to an end, while the winner would move onto the West Division championship game and also clinch a spot in the Region 8C tournament.  Upsala would win an exciting, well played game 5-3 to advance.  The Jays would then lose to Sobieski in the championship game 4-0.

Upsala would open up the Region tournament with a game against the Nisswa Lightning. The Blue Jays dropped this one by an 8-3 score, and a day later the season would come to an end as Upsala would fall to Avon 6-1.

Although the season came to an end, two Blue Jays players would be drafted to play in the state tournament.  Matt Swanson was selected by Sobieski and Eric Lampert was selected by Lastrup.  Both teams would make a deep run in the state tournament, as Lastrup reached the semifinals, while on the other hand Sobieski would reach the championship game before falling to the Raymond Rockets.  Both Swanson and Lampert pitched in multiple games helping their respective teams on their successful runs through the tournament.

The Blue Jays 2016 came to an end with a 15-9 record.
