Upsala Blue Jays

07/12/2016 - Jays Fall Short in Regular Season Finale

The Upsala Blue Jays entered the last weekend of the regular season needing a win to claim first place in the Victory League West Division.  The final game of the regular season was played at Varsity Field on Saturday as the Jays welcomed West Division rival Randall Cubs to town.  The games are always competitive when these two teams face off, and this last game of the regular season didn't disappoint.

Matt Swanson was the starting pitcher for the Blue Jays, while Randall handed the ball to right hander Kyle Boser.  Upsala was able to push across the first run of the game in the bottom of the 3rd on a 2 out RBI single by Matt Swanson.  Randall would tie the game in the 6th, also on a 2 out RBI single, this one off the bat of Eddie Wenzel.  The score remained tied at 1 through 9 innings of play so the game moved into extra innings.  After a scoreless 10th and 11th innings, Randall was finally able to push ahead the eventual winning runs in the top of the 12th on a Blue Jays defensive miscue.  The final score was 3-1.

John Fuchs took the loss in relief of Swanson, while Brett Strack earned the win for Randall in relief of Boser.  Swanson had a pair of hits for Upsala, while Michael Fregin, Dusty Parker, Kyle Petershick, and Eddie Wenzel all had 2 hits for Ranall.

The loss dropped Upsala behind Sobieski in the West Division standings, which means that the Blue Jays will be the #2 seed entering playoffs and will host the #3 seed Flensburg Falcons in the opening round of the West Division playoffs.  This game will be held at Varsity Field in Upsala on Saturday.  First pitch is slated for 1:30.  Pending the results on Saturday, Upsala will either play at Sobieski on Sunday, or will host Randall on Sunday.  The Jays finish the regular season with a 13-5 overall record, and a 10-3 mark in league play.

On Saturday the drawing for the Upsala Blue Jays/UBA raffle was also held.  Below you will find a list of the winners.  Thank you to everyone who sold tickets, purchased tickets, or helped out in any way.
