Upsala Blue Jays

07/30/2014 - Upsala To Host Region Tournament This Weekend

The 2014 season for the Upsala Blue Jays began way back in April.  After a sucessful 2013 season which concluded with the first ever trip to the start tournament in team history, the Jays primary goal in 2014 was to get back to the state tournament.  The fate of accomplishing that goal all comes down to this Saturday, as the Blue Jays will play host to the 2nd and 3rd weekends of the Region 8C tournament.  Upsala will do battle with their long time rival the Sobieski Skis.  The winner will advance in the region tournament, and more importantly, clinch a spot in the state tournament.  The loser will see their season come to an end.  Sobieski has swept the season series with the Jays thus far, winning on all 4 ocassions.

Both Upsala and Sobieski split their 2 games in the opening 2 rounds of the Region 8C tournament.  On Saturday, the Blue Jays fell to the Lastrup Lakers in a 13-3 blow out.  Sobieski would go on to win their opening round game with a 10-0 victory over the Buckman Billygoats.

On Sunday, the Blue Jays would squeek by the St. Stephen Steves by a 4-3 margin.  Matt Swanson provided the big hit for Upsala, a 2 out 2 run single in the 7th to put the Jays ahead 4-3.  On the other half of the bracket, Sobieski would fall to the Fort Ripley Rebels by a 5-3 margin.

This sets the stage for a busy afternoon on Saturday at Varsity Field in Upsala.  3 games will be played Saturday.  At 11 AM, the Freeport Black Sox will match up against the Nisswa Lightning in a state play-in-game.  At 1:30 PM, Upsala wiill play Sobieski, also in a state play-in-game.  At 4 o'clock, the Lastrup Lakers will do battle with the Fort Ripley Rebels in a winner's bracket game.  Both teams have already clinched a spot in the state tournament, but the winner of this one will have the inside track on the road to the Region 8C title.

It will be a great day of baseball, so please come out and support the Upsala Blue Jays, as well as the Upsala Ballpark Association, and the other teams around the Victory League.  Pending Saturday's results, there are also games scheduled for Sunday at 1 PM and 4 PM.
