Upsala Blue Jays

07/16/2014 - Weekend Split

The Upsala Blue Jays entered the playoffs as the #2 seed in the Victory League West Division.  In the opening round, the hometown boys would play host to the #3 seed Randall Cubs.  The two teams had split the season series, but on Saturday the Blue Jays would hammer out 14 hits in route to a 12-1 seven inning victory over the Cubs. Joe Bartkowicz and Matt Swanson each had a homerun along with 3 hits a piece.  Brandon Welinski would also add 3 hits of his own.  Swany was very impressive on the mound, allowing just one hit over seven innings of work.

As well as things went for Upsala on Saturday, things went equally bad on Sunday.  The Jays traveled to Sobieski to take on the #1 seed in the West.  This one was over early, as Sobieski rallied to score 8 runs in the first two innings, building an 8-0 lead.  That would be more than enough as Upsala failed to score, and had just 2 hits.  Joe Bartkowicz and Brady Burggraff each doubled for the Blue Jays.  The final was 12-0 in seven innings.

With the win on Saturday, and the loss on Sunday, the Blue Jays were assured of a home game this coming Saturday.  The only thing to be determined was who their opponent would be.  The #4 seed Flensburg Falcons would upset the #3 seed Randall Cubs on Sunday to stay alive in the West Division playoffs.  This means that Upsala will host Flensburg on Saturday in a region qualifying play-in game.  The winner will qualify for the region 8C tournament and will play #1 seed Sobieski in the West Division championship.  The loser will see their season come to an end.  First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 in Upsala on Saturday.
