The regular season for the Upsala Blue Jays came to a conclusion this past weekend as the Jays split a pair of road games.
On Saturday, Upsala traveled to St. Stephen for a make up game due to a rain out on June 15th. The Jays took this one 5-0 behind a strong outing on the mound from Johnny Fuchs. Fuchs threw a complete game shutout, scattering 7 hits while walking 3 batters. The defense behind him was outstanding, as 4 double plays helped keep the Steves off the board. Brandon Welinski and Dustin Biniek each had 3 hits for Upsala. Matt Swanson and Brady Burggraff added 2 hits as well. Blake and Austin Guggenberger each had 2 hits for St. Stephen.
Following the game, the Blue Jays also defeated the Steves 4-3 in tippy-cup. The combination of Ben and Brady Burggraff led the way for Upsala in this one, picking up the slack for Adam Gerads who couldn't flip a cup if his life depended on it.
On Sunday the Blue Jays would fall 8-1 to division rival Sobieski. A variety of pitchers worked the 9 innings for Sobieski, as Upsala was only able to push across 1 run. 10 different Blue Jays had a hit, including Myron Ripplinger who had his first career Victory League hit. Riley Hirsch led the way with 4 hits for the Skis. The win moved Sobieski to 13-0 and dropped Upsala to 10-3.
With that being said, Sobieski clinched the #1 seed in the VL West playoffs, while the Blue Jays will enter the playoffs as the #2 seed. This means that Upsala will play host to the #3 seed Randall Cubs to open up the playoffs. This game is scheduled for July 12th, with 1:30 being the opening pitch. Depending on the results of opening round games, the Jays will either be at Sobieski or will host Opole/Flensburg on Sunday the 13th.
We look forward to seeing you at the ballyard as the the hometown boys try to earn a return trip to the Region 8C and state tournaments!
