Upsala Blue Jays

07/19/2016 - Jays Split In First Weekend Of Playoffs

The Upsala Blue Jays entered the Victory League West playoffs as the #2 seed.  The Jays opened up playoffs at Varsity Field in Upsala this past Saturday against the #3 seed Flensburg Falcons.  Upsala left hander Matt Swanson started on the bump for Upsala, while the Falcons countered with Justin Jenks.

The Jays left little doubt in this one early on, as Upsala exploded for 11 runs in the 2nd inning, highlighted by a Ben Burggraff 3 run homer to left.  Brady Burggraff, Matt Swanson, and Justin Cichon all had multi-hit days to lead the offensive attack for Upsala.  Swanson looked sharp for the Blue Jays on the mound, working 3 perfect innings.  He then gave way to Brock Cichon who pitched 4 scoreless innings and earned the victory.  Paul Krebs had the lone hit for Flensburg.  The final score was 14-0 in a 7 inning game.

The win for Upsala, coupled with #1 seed Sobieski's 9-0 win over #4 seed Randall, meant that the Jays would travel to Sobieski on Sunday to do battle with the Skis.  Sobieski grabbed any early 1-0 lead off of Jays starter John Fuchs.  Upsala quickly answered in the top of the 2nd, as Ben Burggraff belted a run homer to left.  Sobieski would repsond in their half of the second, as Thomas Miller drove in a pair of runs to take a 3-2 lead.  Upsala tied it in the 3rd when Brady Burggraff doubled off the fence in left center.  In the bottom of the 3rd, Sobieski would take the lead for good when Johnny Czech lined a 3-run homer to right, putting the Ski's up 6-3.  The Skis would tack on a run in each the 5th and 6th innings to push the lead to 8-3.  Ben Burggraff would again homer to right in the 8th to close the gap to 8-4, but Sobiesk would score 5 runs in the bottom of the 8th to push the lead to 13-4.  Chris Reller provided a 2 run single for Sobieski during that rally.  The final score was 13-4.

In an elimination game between #3 Flensburg and #4 Randall, the Randall Cubs were victorious by a 8-3 score.  The loss eliminated Flensburg from playoff contention, which means that Upsala will host Randall this coming Saturday with a Region 8C berth on the line.  The winner will clinch a spot in the region tournament, while the loser will see their season come to an end.  The winner will also advance to the West Division championship game on Sunday in Sobieski.  Upsala and Randall split the series during the season, as Upsala defeated Randall 9-0 on Memorial Day weekend.  Randall won the regular season final in Upsala 3-1 in 12 innings.  First pitch is slated for 1:30 pm on Saturday at Varsity Field in Upsala.
